On October 14, 2017, close to 500 people jammed the CityPlex12 Newark Cinemas for the Yuri Alves Newark Film Showcase, featuring the red carpet advance screenings of GRIND (feat. Robert Wilmote) and ON THE CUSP (feat. Tommy Cuba) – each award-winning short film was directed and filmed in Newark by Yuri Alves.
Yuri Alves Newark Film Showcase was presented by DreamPlay Media, in collaboration with Newark Arts Open Doors, Express Newark, Newark Office of Film and Television, and supported by Horizon BCBS NJ.
The program included special screenings of other Newark-based works from the acclaimed, award-winning director, EXIT ROAD and ECHOES OF FADO, a brief Q&A with the director and featured cast, and a surprise premiere of BLUE FLOOZY featuring Mia X, featured in our BRAVISSIMA Channel’s #OneTakePoetry original series.
The audience was wired up and the demand was so great that we needed to screen an encore presentation. And the program extended beyond the films: a live DJ (Peter Morris) at the cinema, an LED truck featuring movie related images and trailers, and an unforgettable after-party at Jimenez Tobacco Lounge. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Yuri Alves is a Newark-raised filmmaker who has written and directed films, primetime television programs and commercial projects in the U.S. and Europe. Yuri has completed more than a dozen films, including a feature film, “Xavier” at the age of nineteen. His most renowned short films include, “Broken Clouds” and “Exit Road”: each having earned acclaim and recognition with festivals and audiences worldwide. Alves directed two primetime dramatic series, which premiered on Portugal’s RTP Television: “Tempo Final” (2010) and “Filha da Lei” (2017), both to critical acclaim. Alves recently completed a series of short films produced in Newark, “Echoes of Fado”, “On the Cusp” and “Grind”. Alves is in post-production on his first feature length documentary, “Paint the Rust.” In 2012-14, Alves served as Head of Production at Fox Digital Studios in Los Angeles, and Yuri is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of DreamPlay Media. Alves is a graduate of the New Jersey City University Media Arts program, and splits his time between Los Angeles and New Jersey.
