8 world-class artists transformed this 100 year old wall. And now Newark, New Jersey is home to the longest mural on the East Coast - 1.39 miles to be exact! The PORTRAITS Mural is part of Gateways to Newark, a public art and landscape initiative which aims to beautify each of Newark’s entryways.

Fran Bartowski, an English professor at Rutgers University-Newark's Center for Migration and the Global City, had a vision to bring a public art project to Newark, being inspired by a city-wide project in New York's Central Park. Then it hit her: "Cherry Blossoms in Winter."
Gutzon Borglum, best known as the sculptor of Mount Rushmore, left a strong legacy of sculptures and public statues in Newark. "The First Landing Party for the Founders of Newark", a statue by Borglum positioned near the NJPAC, went missing around the year 2012. That is until John Abignon found it.
